Preparing For Your Maine Senior Session

My favorite time to photograph clients is during golden hour (hour prior to sunset) because of the dreamy glow you get in the background. Your location will play into the timing to avoid crowds and make the most of the light.

It's always a good idea to check with your school and plan your senior session well in advance of the yearbook deadline, which is typically late fall. Photographers book out months in advance, so reaching out in late winter or early spring is a great time to get on their calendar for summertime or early fall. Melissa Walden Photography's senior sessions take anywhere from 60-90 minutes and include 30 digital images.

location

Think about what you want your backdrop for your photos to be. Where is your favorite place in Maine? Beaches, fields, flowers, mountains, urban (city), etc. Discuss with your photographer and brainstorm the best location for what you want! Some locations offer variety of backdrops if you walk around. Most photographers can accommodate multiple location if requested. Check out some location ideas here.

outfits

The most important thing when you're deciding on outfits is choosing clothing that you're comfortable in. Make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes (we can switch them out for photos)! Here are some general guidelines:

• Avoid logos on clothing because they are very distracting.
• Solids are a better option than patterns because it does not distract from your face. Patterns are OK if you want, but a clean solid color is always going to make you stand out more than a patterned outfit.
• Neutral/Natural colors like black, white, tan, gray or any color you can find in nature are always a safe bet.
• Layering adds dimension and provide variety to your images (cardigan, jacket, vest, scarf).
